Back to Basics PC17551 Aluminum Stovetop 6-Quart Popcorn Popper

Purchased this item as a backup for our stainless steel popper. Wow, now we know why it was so inexpensive. It has no heft, bottom gets way too warm and easy to burn the popcorn kernels, the gears were warped and it took some serious shop work to get them realigned. Leave it to say…. you get exactly what you pay for.

The problems with the lid on this popper as stated in other reviews are true. I just don’t think its that big a deal. I can still get mine to snap on fine (there’s a little hole on one side that a rod in the top fits in, and a clip under the wood handle on the exact opposite side of the pot that you can see in the picture) the clip snaps fine but the flapping lids don’t perfectly line up after the first week of use. My crank sometimes sticks, I have to put a little extra into the crank but nothing that prevents the popcorn from being perfect. As far as the lid flaps not staying down, I just wear a oven mitt on my left hand and hold the top down and crank with my right hand. The lids don’t exactly stay down and touch the rim of the pot, but there isn’t this big gap like the lid won’t close at all. Oil will fly out of the holes and joints at the center of the lid when the popping first starts (this is after the lid starts to not fit exactly the way it should anymore) but since I have the mitt on I just cover the holes with the mitt. I love this popper but I see that whirly-pop has better reviews in regards to the lid so when I replace my back to the basics model I will try that one to compare. I will never buy anything but a stove-top popper like this ever again, I will even purchase this one again if it means I don’t ever have to eat microwave popcorn again. You will need a cleaning brush to clean the top after the oil builds up over time due to use, depending on how often you use it. Notice how even bad reviews say the popcorn pops beautifully….if you are a stickler for things working EXACTLY THE WAY THE COMPANY SAYS IT SHOULD (which, when you think, nothing ever really does, at least not forever) then you probably will be disappointed with the lid, but if you are a little flexible, you still will say this product is worth it. I think I’m gonna try a stainless steel model next though.

Ok, it does work and makes tasty, unburned, and well heated popcorn….BUT, grease spits out the holes on the top and when I put it in the dishwasher all of the coating came off the metal bowl part. I would NOT recommend this one. We used to have their original models (they were red and much sturdier). I don’t remember ever being burned with flying grease and it certainly withstood many runs through the dishwasher, at least until the glass on the top broke!

The Back to Basics corn popper is the best I’ve ever used. Not only is nearly every kernal popped, but the corn is popped in fewer than five minutes. I also find the popper better than hot-air poppers, and far more convenient.

You won’t want to buy microwave popcorn again. The real thing is very easy and so tasty. I have to admit we don’t wash it very often, so if that makes you squeamish, move on. This will be too much work for you.
You can use scant amount of oil, or be more generous. I’ve been able to use olive oil with no smoking. Olive oil and black pepper is my favorite variety. We use this nearly every day. You can make a single serving or a big bowl, and nearly every kernel pops. The stirring bar thing at the bottom doesn’t reach the edges and it doesn’t seem to make much difference for popcorn, but if you want to pop milo or amaranth, or roast coffee, I’d go with the whirley-pop.
